Biographical / Historical

The NYSID Home Study Course ran from 1916 – 1996. It was the only program of study offered when NYSID was first founded in 1916, only after a few years of operation did the school begin to offer on-site courses. The original curriculum consisted of eleven lesson books with topical essays, illustrations, textile samples, and assignments. After registering for the course, students would receive the materials in the mail, send back completed assignments to be graded by the Faculty, and receive their assignments with corrections and comments by mail. Students who successfully completed the course received a Certificate. The lessons booklets went through several revisions and updates throughout the years, and in 1973 the course was accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to carry six academic credits. The credit could be applied to further study at NYSID or transferred to an accepting College. By the 1990s, the Home Study Course consisted of twenty-six lesson booklets (lessons 17-20 were floorplans), and a pilot program was being developed to provide lectures on cassette tapes.
