Whiton, Augustus Sherrill ("Pete) , 1919-1972
Biography
Sherrill Whiton, Jr. ("Pete") was the only son of NYSID founder and Director Augustus Sherrill Whiton. After Whiton died in 1961, Whiton, Jr. became NYSID Director, having guest lectured on the Decorative Arts since the 1950s. He served as Director until 1972, during which time he worked to bolster the curriculum expanding the Diploma program from two to three years, oversaw the move to 155 East 56th Street (where NYSID would be located for three decades), the creation of Inside, NYSID's newsletter as well as the Alumni Association. He was also in the midst of revision the fourth edition of Interior Design & Decoration when he suddenly passed away in 1972.
