Christopher J. Cyphers served as NYSID President from 2008-2011. Cyphers was the provost at School of Visual Arts as well as the director of institutional advancement and assessment before joining NYSID. He received an undergraduate degree in political science, an MA in liberal studies from Wesleyan University, and a PhD in American political, cultural and intellectual history from SUNY Albany.

Scope and Contents Previous to 1976, the title of College head was Director. During the NASAD and FIDER accreditation process, it was decided that the title would be changed to President. Previous to Arthur Satz, Jr., who became the first President of NYSID after the College received accreditation in 1976, the NYSID Directors were Sherrill Whiton (1916-1961), and Sherrill Whiton, Jr. (1961-1973).
