Materials in this collection are mainly visual and consist of hand painted designs created by surface designer Joann Nelsen from the 1970s - 1990s. The collection also contains a small amount of correspondence, business papers, ephemera and photographs related to both her early career as a fine artist as well as her later career as a textiles and wallcoverings designer.

This folder contains photographic prints depicting Nelsen and other artists at their trade show booth, "Half Drop Designs". The original labeled envelope is present, labeled "Surtex".

This folder contains typewritten letters written by Paul Nelsen, addressed to Joan Hanson at an address in Norway (original envelope included in folder). The letters are newsy and include details of life in San Francisco, California. There is also a tiny bound address book, with handwritten entries.

This folder contains an invitation to "The Smart Mode, Fashion Reflection of the Twenties" exhibition put on by the Staten Island Historical Society, a paper bag from the Whitney Museum of American Art 50th anniversary, and a letter from Janovic Plaza paint store dated Jan 25, 1985 thanking Nelsen for her participation in their "Excellence By Design" competition.

Scope and Contents This folder contains items documenting Nelsen's part in a limited edition book/catalog called "Artifacts at the End of a Decade", published and edited by Carol Huebner and Steven Watson (c.1981). The book includes works by 44 artists including Laurie Anderson, Betsey Johnson, R. Crumb, Sol Lewitt and Robert Wilson.
