Previous to 1976, the title of College head was Director. During the NASAD and FIDER accreditation process, it was decided that the title would be changed to President.

Previous to Arthur Satz, Jr., who became the first President of NYSID after the College received accreditation in 1976, the NYSID Directors were Sherrill Whiton (1916-1961), and Sherrill Whiton, Jr. (1961-1973).

After the death of Sherrill Whiton, Jr., Arthur Satz, Jr. took over as Director from 1973-1976, and continued as President from 1976-1990. In order to keep materials related to Arthur Satz, Jr.'s tenure together, the series containing his records also covers the years 1973-1976 when he served as Director.
